Reviews From Music Producers VS people who don't make music.

Posted by wyldfyre1 - January 14th, 2008

Ooook this is my question to all of you readers out there.

Those of you whom make music and to those of you whom may not make music can awnser this.

If you have music on newgrounds do you think that:

its easier to comment in a negative way if you've not produced music at all?

If so why?

If not why?

Feel free to awnser honostly!

--------------

Personally i think its easier to comment in a negitive way when you've not done any music. I myself in the olden days before i did any music and what not commented kinda harshly from time to time and really that all stopped when i started writing music. Its easy to get discouraged when your writing music and to tell you the truth its hard to understand the true meaning of some text because well.. Its text =). I've learned my lesson and try to be more constructive now and nicer with reviews. I mean i wasn't a complete ass or anything but still. Do tell what you think =) i can't wait to read your opinions!

Much love

It's easier to criticize as a music producer (a half decent one at least) since you actually know what you're talking about

woot first responce! Thanks for your input man!

Yes it is easier to comment negatively if you haven't produced music at all. However, no matter if you have written music before, or never even touched a keyboard, music that is poorly produced will get a bad rating, and a bad review. There is always that pang of guilt when I give a bad review, because I know that when anyone puts something out to be shown, its part of them. But if it sux, it sux. and might as well tell them.

Also, if you like my stuff, would you mind seconding me on the underdoglist? Its in the audio forum.

Interesting point of view! Yeah when something isn't that good i tend to try to be easy on people but give an honost review. I mean the best thing to do in any aspect of reviewing is be honost.. I'm more wondering if its easier to be harsher if your a producer or not. =) Great responce!

I think it's easier to be critical if you produce music yourself. When you've done music of your own for a long time, you can tell if they just slapped loops together with default rhythms and such. Those without a musical ear just say "OMGZ DATS AWESUM!!!" - they can't tell that the musician didn't make it themselves.

And if you're a musician, you'll always have an opinion as to how the chord progression was predictable, how the melodies were too cliched, the drums were unimaginative, etc.

Of course, I try to keep things in perspective. If the musician is a 12-year-old kid who just found Garageband, I'll be more lenient. :)

another great outlook on the question i presented. I can agree with that also. i'm loving the opinions i'm getting here.

Personally I think its easier to comment in a postive way when you've done music. In the olden days I was kind. I love sucking the cum outta musician cocks. love.

hah um, i guess thats one way to put it! =). Thanks for the feedback.

The music have to touch the soul to be good, don`t matter be or not a music producer. The good or bad comment matter only on one thing:be sincere or not.

Well i like how you think. If only some of it were true! Unfortunatly there are alot of people out there that are just cruel in their comments and reviews. I see what you mean however. hmm.. thanks for posting your point of view.

I think not, when you've made music yourself it's easier to see how much work/talent is required to make something. It's also easier to recognize what programs were used/etc, FL Studio, Ejay, etc, each of which require different ammounts of skill to use. The reviews still tend to be more positive and helpful than that of the other nonmusical users who just vote on how music sounds compared to pieces they hear on outer sources, ie radio/tv/etc.

Huh, i see your point also. Interesting! Thanks for posting your thoughts!

hah nice! Though i'm not sure what that has to do with the topic! =). Either way do your thing man!

I think that, like someone said, when you produce music you can tell if someone has done a good job or not. But then again, if someone has done a great song, you can also tell if the person has worked hard on it, because you know the process of creating music. So i think it swings both ways, if you know what i mean ;)

i can understand that responce. Heh my whole point is that its easier to be negetive about a song if you haven't produced. However music is music. People will either like it or not. As I say all the time you can't please everyone all of the time. You can create a Masterpeice and there will still be someone out there that says "Oh that sucks" haha.

Well I'm not a very good producer. But I always try to help people as much as I can when commenting in a song. I'm not really harsh to anyone, because, to think, everyone started low, right?:) And everyone with a little talent and a lot of hard work can do it good, as long as they are critised properly for what they do, and how they can improve. But you should try, that IF you are critising a song, to include a point of improvement, and how they can do it:) Because being only harsh and having no positive opinion about something, makes it less fun for someone to continue producing, right?
There are a lot of ppl that have enough potential to make good stuff, but getting no proper comments, means that they will be pissed on, but if you absolutely have to be harsh to someone, at least try to tell them what they can do to do better!:)
